Hey All - Long time gone!

Don't know if anyone still stops by this blog or not, it's been all but abandoned by me. It's been a crazy last few years. I've been living in Utah, but have now recently moved back to California/Pasadena. Where I am working at Disney consumer Products, helping to build a multimedia program for the Food Health and Beauty division. I still draw and design when I can and I've got a few samples of my motion work up at a new blog here: www.motionpirate.com.

I won't be posting with any frequency here - but I'll try and keep it alive. It's got great search engine rankings!

It's been a long time since I posted anything, and it's been a fantastic vacation for me. Here are a few photos from my trip to NewYork. I'll have more as soon as I wade through them all - I filled up a full 1g sd card (about 1,000 photos) Sadly many of them did not come out well. All in all it was an amazing trip. There is way to much to see in just a few days. - These are from the Met, Moma, and top of the Empire state.

I've got this awesome sketchbook that I've been painting in lately - it's got a heavy tooth that adds some great texture. Heres a few pages of experiments.
I was researching (googling) Maynard Dixon and came across Luc Desmarchelier's blog - he's got some awesome landscapes and really knows his stuff - I did a study off one of his paints. Check him out here Ushuaia.

I've got an awesome concept project coming up. It's got a lot of extreme shapes and I've really been working to stretch the contrasts.
While exploring character silhouettes I kept seeing "fat" Xmen shapes, and I had to take this one to finish. I didn't really get the exaggeration I was searching for, but luckily theres a whole team of Xmen to play with.

I borrowed the Color Palette from Josh Middleton. If you're not familiar with his work check it out. He does some amazing cover work for comics.

From Thur.s nights drawing club. I am so rusty... fighting the control Z tendency. The computer lets you be lazy with your decision making when it comes to drawing, non committal. Pen and ink is so unforgiving.

Things have been absolutely ridiculous lately. I'm so sorry to those of you who stop by looking for some fresh squeezed content and just finding the same old stale posts. Things should be getting back to normal now... I probably shouldn't be showing this yet... but it's been so long since a post. This is some freelance/contract work - this started of as a low rez 3d model, the geometry is still under there somwhere, coverd up with A lot O photoshopping! Look for more concept art coming soon.

I've been sick as a dog since I got back to California. I think I must've caught a bug on the plane.

Vacation is over! Those 4 weeks flew by. I spent most of my time working some freelance design gigs, and not nearly enough time drawing and/or painting. I'll have my work posted up in a few days over at my graphics and motion site as soon as I get permission to put it on the web.

My trip to Utah was fantastic, it was really good to see my family, and a lot of old friends who were in town, plus I spent a little quality time with my brother up on the slopes snowboarding!

Here are a few pics to document the trip.

Thanksgiving has been a serious time to slack off - A much needed break. I figured I get some stuff posted before the whirlwind starts again next week. The Working Title club has an awesome guest for it's last meeting before the break. Syd Mead visited for a few hours in a very informal setting and chatted with us. Everyone had a chance to get a personal portfolio review from the master himself. Awesome! Kudos to the Entertainment club president for making it happen! Here are a few pics of of Syd Meade going through my portfolio.

Here is the Teaser Poster I created for my movie redesign project. I am reworking the old Disney movie "The Black Hole". You may not be familiar with it, I wasn't. It was released in 1979 as Disney's answer to Star Wars. Despite having a fairly famous cast and, "Some of the most deliciously imaginative special effects ever put on film."(-Newsweek Magazine 1972) - the film never attained huge success. The story is loosely based off 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the antagonist patterned after Captain Nemo. The story is lacking in a few points but overall it has some fun ideas and holds a lot of originality for it's time. I figure it's ripe for a makeover and I thought I'd see if I could beat the Hollywood recycle machine. The last few posts have been exploring some design directions. I'll be posting more as the project evolves. For now enjoy this poster.

The date is mostly arbitrary, just seems like all the summer blockbusters are released in July.

So I was looking at my old spice deodorant and thought to myself... yeah thats a pretty neat design that could be appropriated to something else.. like a spacheship, or maybe a tank hm..... So I googled deodorant to gather a few more images for shapes and then went to town. This will be the first in the set.

I always avoid rendering out the eyes. This started as an exercise for trying to get some photo real eyes, and I ended up going a little crazy on the metal. I'm not really happy with the overall design yet, but I was having so much fun with the lighting tricks I didn't really care.

I had a lot of fun with this one - I'm prepping for the term review, it's keeping me really busy - tons of projects going on. Plus homework and freelance gigs. It was fun to take a break and do some struggling in Photoshop. Made up caricature( if it wasn't for the lips I think it might almost look like Clint Eastwood). Just trying figure out a good system for lighting, and how to work in some reflected (rim?) light for drama!

This was too big to scan in one pass so I had to stitch it together in ps. I really messed up the cropping and I cloned out all the line work of the hair trying to hide the scanning stitches.

This was a fun drawing , I've been studying alot of tiepolo and Durer.
I really tried to incorporate some of their techniques into this study.

Today I experimented with a new medium: Ink & Brush.

These three images are each about 2 inches tall, done from 10 min poses and arranged here in chronological order from left to right. I was so frustrated with my first attempt that I just about left class. I had been feeling like I was getting a pretty good handle on the head and then I produce a drawing like this. For whatever reason I was just not feeling it. I was forced to take a step back and really focus on each mark, I had to think about what I was doing and remember what I have learned. It was a real process and a huge learning experience for me. By the end of the class I was pretty keyed up and felt "on" again. I'll post up those drawings late, I just wanted post this up while I still remember the experience. Sometimes to go faster you have to slow down!

Over the weekend I visited the museum(The Huntington Library) and saw some great artwork! There were 3 Sargent's and a Rembrant that I was completely surprised at seeing. I got some great sculpture reference for my latest assignment.

I am reproducing a head/bust sculpture at a smaller scale, I will then add an emotion to the face and use it to draw from. Heres a few shots to show you the start of the proccess and the scale. Sorry about the quality, a new camera is top on my list for next semester. I'll post up more as I complete this. Thanks for stopping by!

Sculpy on a plastic skull

My first attempt with red clay before I realized how hard it was to work with and how fast it dries.

It has been midterms the past two weeks, crazy busy. I pulled my first true ArtCenter all nighter for my design 2 class. I was literally printing and cutting right up until the presentation at 8:30 am. But it all went well and once I got a positive critique it made all the tired melt away. I fabricated a mini display case to present all of my design solutions for class. I'll post up pictures as soon as I get it back.

I'm really trying to use less and less reference to become familiar with the construction of the head. This is pretty emotionless and looks a little strange but it was relaxing.

Todays was one of those good days. Just pleasing in every way. I slept in till 10:00, had In&Out for lunch. Then in the afternoon I had to get the alignment done on my car, it ended up taking about 3 solid hours at the Sears auto center. You think this would be enough to ruin any day, not so. I went next door and bought a new skateboard at the sports store. I spent the whole afternoon skating around the streets of downtown Pasadena, stopping only to sketch a few times. It was a perfect 75 degrees with a cool ocean breeze blowing in from the coast. I was very wobbly at first, since the last time I was on a skateboard I was about 13. I had a blast, but the people watching probably got an even better laugh. A chubby guy sweating all over the place as he scoots around on this little deck.

I must admit I am glad I did not go for the longboard. This little deck was made for carving, it's the only way to get around all the people.

When I picked up the car I was still in a state of euphoria from the ride, everything seemed smooth. When I got home my order from Amazon was waiting for me. All 3 seasons of Arrested Development on DVD. If you haven't seen it do yourself a favor and check it out. One of the most underrated shows of all time.

I had to take a little time before bed to sketch. I decided to explore character idea from an earlier post. Started out throwing down some different poses with pure black then went from there.... I started to flesh out the linework and explore the shape but felt like I should stop because I was getting very sloppy. Hopefully I wcan continue this tomorrow. I'd like to finish it.

Nothing special, I've been busy with some freelance work, hopefully I'll post some stuff from it up soon. I popped in one of the best movies I remember from my childhood - "Clash of the Titans" and did a quick study of one of the characters. It doesn't really hold a likeness and I wasn't too excited about it so I probably won't come back to it.

I killed myself and stayed up late to do some sketching. I couldn't help it after a friend sent me to Joshua Middlestons site - amazing comic stuff. Looking at his work helpedout alot with this style of coloring,or colouring if your british.

Again here is the line work and the color overlay, I am finding out that with this technique it really helps to understand form and cast shadow... hence you must define your light source, and then understand the underlying form of your figure. I know I am making it sound complex, but I am doing this as a learning exercise.

I was going for cartoonish superhero proportions, comic-esque, if you will, and then it turned out like the Tick. Talk about finding yourself in your art! I love the Tick. SPOoN!

I finallyy got my New MacPro up and running, I thought I should celebrate with a little sketching.

This was for the cgtalk dailysketch. The topic was "hands". There is generally a time limit on these. The line sketch is where I was 25min into it, after sketching some ideas and looking for inspiration. I thought I would stick with the style I have been trying to learn and keep it simple. I finished about 2.5 hours later, not really happy with it, I think the idea got away from me. So I slap in a background and stop wasting time on it.

Struggling for inspiration today... I took a silhouette from a friend of mine and tried to flesh it out. Still trying to learn a tight toon style, it helps to limit my colors. I can see this technique becoming a very fast method for visualization once mastered.

quickie for tonight - I was inspired by an Aaron anderson original for this one. Done in Photoshop - I started out with the intention of going with a more cartoon feel, trying to keep the line work and using few and completley opaque colors, man thats hard to do, I have a new appreciation for the linework of toon artists. It's simple but its not easy.
